Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, and Deep Learning – What’s the Difference?
Artificial Intelligence
AI refers to the concept of computers performing tasks that would normally require human intelligence. Often, the programming effort is high because rules and logic also need to be defined and coded in the form of algorithms.
Machine Learning
Machine learning is a subdiscipline of AI that takes a different approach: it relies on large datasets from which the machine learns according to defined algorithms. The type of data and the model rules must be clearly defined to achieve the desired results. Within these boundaries, the machine learns on its own, correcting and improving its approach over the course of training.
Deep Learning
Deep learning is a subdiscipline of machine learning that is particularly well suited to complex tasks such as image and speech recognition. Neural networks are defined and trained so that the machine can recognise and interpret images and speech.

A short AI glossary
Algorithm
Algorithm: A clear sequence of steps or instructions performed to solve a specific problem or complete a task.
Generative AI
Generative AI: The field in which AI is trained not only to reproduce learned content 1:1 but also to create new content. This can include images, text, music, videos, and any other type of file.
Natural Language Processing (NLP)
NLP (Natural Language Processing): The interaction between computers and human language. The aim is to understand, interpret, and generate natural language in a way that feels human and responds appropriately.
Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation): A method for steering model outputs and ensuring factual accuracy. RAG combines querying large document sets (retrieval) with generating responses precisely from the content contained in those documents.
Computer Vision
Computer Vision: The visual processing of data by AI. Examples include facial recognition and traffic sign detection in modern cars. In everyday business contexts, visual recognition is often used for simpler tasks: inspecting products for quality control, detecting weeds in agriculture.
